Laguna Hills starts strong
By DAMIAN CALHOUN
SANTA ANA Ryan Wertenberger passed for two touchdowns to lead visiting Laguna Hills to a 29-15 nonleague victory over Segerstrom on Friday.
Wertenberger's TD passes came in the first quarter when the Hawks (1-0) appeared ready to turn the game into a rout.
Laguna Hills scored on its first two possessions and added a touchdown with 10:34 remaining in the second quarter for a 22-0 lead.
Segerstrom (0-1) scored its first touchdown on a 30-yard pass from Ricky Martinez to Francisco Partida with 26 seconds remaining in the first half to cut the deficit to 22-7.
The Jaguars' momentum turned out to be short-lived as Sean Tucker returned the ensuing kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown to give Laguna Hills a 29-7 halftime lead.
Segerstrom added a touchdown in the fourth quarter on a 4-yard run by Akeem Christian and with the two-point conversion made the score 29-15 with 9:11 remaining, but that was as close as it would get.
"Segerstrom decided that they were ready to play football and they didn't give up," Laguna Hills coach Bruce Ingalls said. "We let up, I don't know why we did that.
"Like I told the guys, we were hot or not tonight."
