JV Wins at Segerstrom

They say defense wins games and it was never more evident than this afternoon at Segerstrom HS where the JV Hawks prevailed in a close contest with the Jaguars.

Segerstrom kicked the game off and started their march towards the Hawk goal line but an interception by Nofsinger on the Hawk 30 yd line ended their progress. The Hawk offense was not long in making it;s mark. On it's first play QB Spain threw a lateral to Murray who threw downfield to Valenstein who ran for the touchdown. Makin made the point after. 7-0 Hawks. The remainder of the first quarter belonged to the defense who sacked (Hawk #66), intercepted (Valenstein) and tackled (Hawk #63) their way to breaking up successive Segerstrom drives.

It was not until early in the second quarter that the Segerstrom offense finally broke through on a converted 4th down for the touchdown. The snap to the holder was fumbled however. 7-6 Hawks. The Hawk offense came out swinging. On 2nd and 10 at the Hawk 25 Spain completed a 15yd pass to Hout to keep the drive alive but the following series of downs ended in a punt. It turned again to the Defense who made a quarter ending goal line stand to prevent the Jaguars from taking the lead.

The third quarter started as the first half ended with the defense stepping up and making an interception on the 1yd line. Neither offense could make much progress until deep into the quarter when the Hawks found their groove. Successive completions from Spain to Murray and Richardson saw the Hawks with a first and 10 at the Jaguar 30 yd line. A pass attempt to Bollhagen at the goal line was ruled pass interference. First and Goal Hawks as the quarter expired.

On the first play of the fourth Spain handed off to Vorshek who took it over the line for the Touchdown. Makin made the point after. 14-6 Hawks. Segerstrom responded quickly and drove for the touchdown. They attempted a 2 point conversion but , as was the case all day, the Hawk Defense was not having it. 14-12 Hawks. On the next drive the Hawks fumbled setting up a tense final few minutes. Segerstrom unsuccessfully attempted to convert on 4th and the Hawks got the ball back on their 30yd line with 3.30 to go. The next four downs went quickly though. A sack, a delay of game penalty and running play broken up in the backfield led to 4th and 30 on the Hawk 10 yard line and a punt .Segerstrom would get the ball on their own 42 yard line with 2 mins left to play. Yet again the Hawk defense was called upon to save the day.  (Hawk #56) sacked their quarterback slowing their progress. As the clock ticked down the Segerstrom QB miscounted the downs and spiked the ball on 4th down automatically giving the ball back to the Hawks with 32 seconds left to play. Spain took a knee and we all (coaches, players and parents) exhaled.

Final Score Segerstrom 12 - 14 JV Hawks
