The Freshmen Hawks got their first victory of the season with 32-0 rout of the Woodbridge Warriors.
Just about everything went right for the Hawks in this game. On the opening kickoff, K Bradford Runyon got a great bounce and put the ball in the endzone for a touchback. With the ball at their own 20 yard line, Woodbridge went three and out thanks to a big sack by Alex Salera. The ensuing punt was returned 30 yards by Andrew Whitt, giving the Hawks the ball at the Woodbridge 10 yard line. The Hawks scored three plays later on a 5 yard TD run by Salera. The PAT was missed. The Hawks kickoff team did a great job covering the kickoff forcing WB to starting again at their own 20 yard line. WB fumbled on their first play. The fumble was recovered by Daniel Vandal giving the Hawks the ball at the WB 16 yard line. After two incomplete passes, Salera took the handoff and ran 16 yards for a TD. A 2 point PAT run was no good. The Hawks' defense stepped up again on the next possession. Thanks again to a sack by Salera, Woodbridge went three and out and punted. The Hawks marched 68 yards in five plays scoring on a 20 yard TD run by Salera. A 2 point PAT pass from Connor Landberg to Andrew Whitt was good giving the Hawks a 20-0 lead after one quarter of play. Woodbridge started their next drive on their 25 yard line. An errant lateral pass was recovered by Drake Nelson, giving the Hawks the ball at the WB 1 yard line. Kai Kanno then scored on a 1 yard TD run. The PAT was missed. After an exchange of possessions, the Hawks' "D" forced another WB fumble. It was recovered by Miles Gastil, giving the Hawks the ball at the WB 14 yard line. After a 10 yard run by Kanno put the ball on the 4, Kanno scored a TD on a 4 yard run. The PAT was missed. A very busy first half ended with the Hawks up 32-0.
The third quarter began with an exchange of punts. The Hawks got the ball at the WB 45 yard line. A 17 yard pass from Landberg to Michael Bieniak moved the ball deep into WB territory. After another first down, the Hawks fumbled ending the scoring threat. The regulation game was called at the end of the third quarter giving the Hawks a 32-0 victory. The fourth quarter was the "B" game highlighted by a 35 yard run by QB Steven Sprecher and a 5 yard TD pass from Sprecher to Bradford Runyon.
The Hawks defense was outstanding keeping Woodbridge in their side of the 50 all game and forcing three turnovers. The defense had several big hits. The offense capitalized on great field position scoring 5 TDs. It was a great team effort. The Hawks play the Canyon Comanches next Thursday at LHHS.
