The Freshmen Hawks opened PCL play with a convincing 43-20 win over the Corona Del Mar Sea Kings.  The Hawks turned a 1 point halftime lead into a 23 point victory by outscoring the Sea Kings 22-0 in the second half.  The offense had the ball eight times and scored six TDs sparked by several long plays.  The defense, after giving up two big plays early in the game, buckled up and only allowed one score the rest of the game.

After receiving the opening kickoff, the Sea Kings scored on the second play of the game on a 63 yard TD run.  The Hawks answered right back.  They scored on their second play on a 61 yard TD run by QB Connor Landberg.  The PAT by Bradford Runyon was good tying the game at 7-7.  A touchback kickoff by B. Runyon put CDM on their own 20 yard line.  CDM then marched 80 yards in 9 plays scoring a TD on a fourth down pass of 43 yards.  The LH offense went right back to work but an eight play drive ended with a tipped pass being intercepted by CDM.  The LH defense stepped up and forced CDM to turn the ball over on downs.  The Hawks then drove the ball 59 yards in nine plays scoring on a 1 yard TD run by Alex Salera.  The PAT was good tying the game at 14.  The drive was highlighted by first down runs by Kai Kanno and Salera and an 18 yard pass completion from Landberg to Miles Gastil.    CDM  scored a TD on their next possession moving the ball 55 yards in just five plays.  The PAT was partially blocked and was no good.  With three minutes left in the first half, the Hawks got the ball at their own 34 yard line.  Landberg connected with Nicholas Harrison for a 22 yard pass & catch.  Three plays later, Andrew Whitt scored an apparently TD on a 36 yard run however an inadvertent referee whistle negated the score.  After some negotiating, the referees placed the ball on the 20 yard line.  Undaunted, the Hawks scored a TD three plays later.  A 19 yard pass from Landberg to Whitt put the ball on the 3.  Salera then scored on a three yard run.  The PAT was good giving the Hawks a 21-20 halftime lead.

The Hawks received the second half kickoff and moved right down the field.  LH went 66 yards in 6 plays scoring on a 1 yard TD run by Landberg.  The drive was highlighted by runs of 11 & 17 yards by Kanno and a 30 yard pass completion from Landberg to Gastil.  The PAT was good giving the Hawks a 28-20 lead.  CDM then moved the ball inside the Hawks' 40 on a 30 yard run.  However, the defense dug in and forced CDM to turn the ball over on downs.  LH went three and out and punted for the first and only time.  Starting at their own 46, CDM moved the ball inside the Hawks' 5 yard line.  A short run and two incomplete passes forced CDM to attempt a field goal which was no good.  Taking the ball over at the 20, the Hawks scored three plays later on an electrifying 72 yard TD run by Landberg.  A botched PAT kick resulted in 2 points on a pass from Landberg to Gastil.  After forcing CDM to turn the ball over on downs, the Hawks went 38 yards on 7 plays.  Kanno scored a TD on a 1 yard run.  The PAT was good giving the Hawks a 43-20 lead with 2:30 to play.  The Hawks forced CDM to turned the ball over on downs again then ran out the clock to end the game.

The Hawks will try to go 2-0 in league when they face the University Trojans next Thursday at University High School in Irvine.
