The JV Hawks came up short in a very close game at CDM Thursday. CDM elected to receive the ball and on their first drove for the touchdown. Despite goal line stops on first and second down by Vandal and Shoop CDM found the receiver in the corner for the score on 3rd down. The PAT was good, 7-0 CDM. For the remainder of the first period the Hawks would trade possession with CDM as each were forced to punt on their ensuing drives. The Hawks survived a scare late in the quarter when Wright was injured after a helmet to helmet collision and was slow to get up. After a few minutes on the ground he got to his feet and left and the field under his own steam much to the relief of all.
The second period followed on from where the first left off. Midway through the period with the Hawks unable to find the end zone they unsuccessfully attempted a field goal. In the dying seconds of the half CDM found the opening and ran for the touchdown. 14-0 CDM at the half.
The Hawk offense kicked into gear in the third. A sack by Vandal on defense forced CDM to punt with 8.02 to go. Spain found Valenstein twice to move the ball to the CDM 32 yard line. A sack and an interception ended the progress. The defense held strong. A key blocked pass by Martindale forced CDM to punt again. The Hawks got the ball back at their own 32 with 1.42 to go. Not having much success in the air the offense switched to the ground attack. Valenstein started the drive with a 13 yard run to set up first down at the Hawk 45. From there on it was all Vorsheck who ran the ball 5 times over the next five downs and finally found the gap that led to the score at the buzzer. 14-7 CDM after 3.
On the initial drive of the 4th period CDM scored but failed to convert the point after. 20-6 CDM with 9.09 to go. On the kickoff return Valenstein broke through and clear setting up a first down at the CDM 22 yard line. On 3rd and 13 Tereschuk completed to Valenstein in the end zone for the touchdown. Makin made the extra point. CDM 20 - Hawks 14. The defense again frustrated the CDM offense. Flores made a key play on 3rd down applying pressure to the CDM QB and forcing the incompletion. The Hawks got the ball back with 6.00 minutes to go. The offense drive forward on the ground but key penalties stopped them. A false start followed immediately by a holding penalty brought up 2nd and 20. CDM broke through the offensive line and forced the interception at the Hawk 44 with 2 minutes to play. CDM worked the clock from there for the victory. Final ScoreCDM 20 Hawks 14.
Next week the JV Hawks take on University at home.
