Laguna Hills vs. Mayfair
Southern Division final
Friday night, 7: 30 p.m.
Hawks coach Bruce Ingalls sat at his table with players Robert Refsynder, Joe Franco and Matt Giovinazzo at Monday’s CIF-SS football press conference at the Rose Center in Westminster.
Laguna Hills (12-0) is one of three undefeated county teams.
Ingalls led the Hawks to the Pacific Coast League title last year as well, but the Hawks were knocked out by Cypress in the first round. After Monday’s lunch, Ingalls explained how the team reached the final this season.
It’s Ingalls first finals appearance as coach of the Hawks.
“The kids have done what’s necessary to get here,” he said. “It’s not about anything more than the kids and the assistant coaches.
“It’s been a total team effort. We don’t have impressive stats, though the defense has nice credentials. It’s 11 guys together that understand their role that makes it special.”
Refsynder said being at Monday’s luncheon was exciting and that the team is going to prepare hard for Mayfair. After last season’s early exit, the Hawks waited all year to get to this point.
“It’s nice to reach those expectations,” Refsynder said. “To finish the perfect season would be great.”
Last finals appearance: 1997, defeated La Mirada 56-14.
CIF football titles: 2 (1997, 1991)
